Book Review: Little Life of Jesus

Book Review: Little Life of Jesus

Artwork © 2013 Ignatius Press “This book reminds me of an animated movie,” my husband said upon first reading Little Life of Jesus by Anne Gravier to our young son. I thought it an apt description! The illustrations by Adeline Avril have a cinematic feel to them, upon which I will elaborate below.    The text of Little Life of Jesus hits highlights of the New Testament; Jesus’ birth, the Presentation in the Temple, the Finding of the Boy Jesus in the Temple, the Baptism of Jesus, the calling of the disciples, Jesus performing miracles, Jesus letting the children come to...

Book Pre-Order: The Women Doctors of the Church

Book Pre-Order: The Women Doctors of the Church

I hit the ground running this month, and I haven’t stopped!  I am hoping to be able to do another book review next week. But in the meantime, I have exciting news: a book I illustrated, The Women Doctors of the Church by Colleen Pressprich, is now available for pre-order! I must say, I think this is the loveliest book I’ve worked on yet, and I can’t wait for its release.

UPDATE: Well... I just heard from the editor that Amazon has it wrong! It is slated for a Fall 2022 release now. So stay tuned....

Book Review: The Beggar and the Bluebird

Artwork © Sophia Press    Guest Reviewer: Christine Peters   By Anthony DeStefano &  Illustrated by: Richard Cowdrey This beautifully written and illustrated children’s book follows the pattern of a fairy tale.  The beggar and bluebird meet in a snowy city park on the day before Christmas.  Like a fairy tale with 3 turn-of-events, the beggar pleadingly charges the bluebird with 3 tasks of flying across town to help people in need – a hungry beggar, a poor young widow with children, and a boy in the hospital.    All art © Richard Cowdrey/Sophia Institute Press   The bluebird knows a winter storm is...

Book Review: Light of the Saints

Book Review: Light of the Saints
I had seen a couple of little “Shine the Light” style books before, and thought it was a cute concept. Take a flashlight, hold it behind the page you are reading, and a new image appears. It works especially well when applied to the Saints! Their lives were full of the hidden mysteries of God, and their virtues shined through. Hold a flashlight to Light of the Saints by Cory Heimann, illustrated by Tricia Dugat, and holy attributes and images physically appear. It is wonderful!

Book Review: Joseph's Donkey

Book Review: Joseph's Donkey
Educator Christine Peters recommends this beautifully written and illustrated rhyming book for children.  In portraying the strength and faithfulness of the donkey, the author and illustrator also show the same virtues in Joseph.
