I’m switching it up this week with a Catholic children’s magazine review! I must add a disclaimer- I have done illustrations for this new kids magazine, but I think my own contributions have been a small enough part of it to give you my mostly unbiased thoughts.
OSV Kids is a monthly, subscription based magazine published by Our Sunday Visitor. It’s a lively little magazine in the vein of that classic kids’ magazine, Highlights, but with Catholic themes. It is divided into different sections that teach your little ones bite sized facts about the Church, the Bible, the saints, theology (“Teeny Tiny Theology,” to be precise!), the Liturgical seasons, feast days and more. Additionally, each issue contains games or puzzles, a craft project, and a saint prayer card that can be cut out.

Geared toward children ages 2-6, this magazine is a perfect size to take on the go; it could fit in a purse or backpack, and can easily be brought to Mass. In fact, my friend’s kids used it during Holy Week to help follow along with the Way of the Cross while it was read in the Passion narrative of the Gospel!

The authors of the articles are varied, but each seem to be chosen for their work in Catholic Children’s ministries, which I like. The artwork is also varied, and beyond having the privilege of seeing some of my own art in this publication, I’ve delighted in seeing art done by friends and acquaintances. It is really too fun. You will also find some lovely traditional art mixed in, which I feel is important to show to kids.
If you are looking for a good supplement for the faith education of your young children, I’ll happily recommend a subscription. I’m sure they would look forward to receiving this gem once a month in the mail! Gift subscriptions are also available.
