At 22 months, my son’s attention span varies quite a bit, especially when it comes to reading books! But Love God, Love Me, Love You, a Tiny Saints® board book written by Joe Klinker and illustrated by Manuel Corsi, is the ideal length for him as it is perfectly geared toward wee ones.
In Love God, Love Me, Love You, St. Martin de Porres uses his list of “things to do” to teach your child the first commandment: to Love the Lord with all of your strength and heart. I really like how the importance of this commandment is stressed in the book. Following that, the tiny saint instructs one to “Love myself, exactly as I am,” and also to love those around you. Personally, I would have left off the “exactly” part, as I believe that children in our age get told that a lot, and a better reminder might be to look to who God is calling them to be. But that is possibly a little too wordy for the tender age meant for this book. Overall, the list of St. Martin is a cute and clever way to put forth the lessons found in this little book.
Manuel Corsi’s illustrations are simple and sweet. They include just enough details to make them fun and interesting to the little folks, as I have gleaned from my son. The art style is his favorite kind- bright colors on a white background. And Baby H. really likes all the animals sprinkled throughout the book. Finding where the tiny mouse was on a lot of the pages became a favorite game. He was tickled with the page where the mouse sat on St. Martin’s head! The animals are most appropriate too, as St. Martin was known for animals following him around, and listening to his instructions.
I know we will be checking out more books in this Tiny Saints series as they provide an easy way to get our son interested in the lessons of our faith. Check out Love God, Love Me, Love You for your littlest ones today, or find the whole set of six Tiny Saints® books bundled together at OSV!
